Wezy Tax Exempt

Set up Tax Exempt, then test the full journey.

This guide is for agencies and merchants who want to evaluate and configure the app without a call. The app interface is in English; the labels below match the screens you will use.

Before you start

  • Have access to Apps, the theme editor and the relevant tax settings.
  • Note the Shopify plan, theme, active markets, fulfillment countries and whether prices include VAT.
  • Prepare the seller’s company details and a suitable test customer. Use a development store or Shopify’s test payment setup for test orders.
  • Start with Starter for the VAT workflow. Choose Pro B2B if the client also needs HT/TTC and collection rate controls.

1. Install and choose the plan

Install Wezy Tax Exempt from its Shopify listing, open the app and choose the plan in Pricing. The first subscription has a 7-day trial; a plan change does not create another trial.

  • Confirm which store you are working on before accepting Shopify’s billing screen.
  • Use Pro B2B for HT/TTC. Starter is enough to evaluate the EU VAT workflow.

Check before moving on

You can open the dashboard and the features included in the chosen plan.

2. Set the seller details and EU workflow

Open Settings. In Seller Information, enter VAT Number, Company Name, Address and Country. These details are used for the app’s eligibility checks and reverse-charge information.

  • Choose whether to turn on Enable EU reverse charge.
  • Select Default language for reverse-charge text and notification emails.
  • Save the settings and check that the company country is correct for this store.

Check before moving on

The seller details and the EU reverse-charge setting match the client’s intended configuration.

3. Put the VAT field in the customer journey

For stores using the theme path, open Online Store > Themes > Customize. On a suitable page or section that supports app blocks, add VAT ID Check from Wezy Tax Exempt. Edit the Widget title, optional subtitle and button text, then save.

For Shopify Plus, use Settings > Checkout > Customize to add VAT Number Field at the supported checkout position. In that block’s settings, enable Allow app to block checkout and save, so validation and tax updates can complete before payment.

  • Use the theme path before checkout on non-Plus stores.
  • Test with a signed-in customer who has a shipping address in Shopify; entering an email alone does not authenticate a customer for exemption.
  • Follow the in-app Invoice Setup instructions if you also want the VAT Number Field on the order status page.

Check before moving on

The intended customer can find and use the field in the selected journey.

4. Check the validation and the final order

Submit a VAT check in the chosen journey, then open VAT Validations in the app. Review the result and the stored consultation proof. A valid number does not automatically make every destination eligible.

  • Test a supported cross-border EU order with matching buyer VAT and shipping country.
  • Test a domestic delivery and an invalid VAT number. They must not receive the app’s EU reverse-charge exemption.
  • If VIES is unavailable or the address is incomplete, check that the app does not grant an exemption from that incomplete result.
  • Use the actual Shopify order and checkout tax totals to verify the result. A storefront message alone is not the final tax calculation.

Check before moving on

You have checked both an eligible case and cases that must keep their normal tax treatment.

5. Add HT/TTC controls if the client needs them

This step uses Pro B2B. In Settings > Tax Exempt Discount (HT/TTC), configure Enable tax-exempt discount, Default VAT rate (%) and Discount label. Choose Apply discount on shipping costs only when that treatment matches the store configuration.

For different collection rates, use Browse Collections, assign the applicable VAT rate and save. The app may require approval of the Shopify discount permission before this feature can be enabled.

  • In the theme editor, add HT/TTC Price Toggle where the template supports app blocks.
  • Choose Toggle visibility: Tax-exempt customers only or All visitors. Edit the HT/TTC labels and Info text as needed.
  • The switch controls display. The automatic discount controls the eligible price adjustment. Check both separately.
  • Test a product in each configured collection, shipping, an existing promotion and every active currency or market relevant to the client.

Check before moving on

The displayed prices and final order amounts are correct for the store’s actual configuration.

6. Adapt the form and invoice line

Open Form Builder to edit the request title, fields, required inputs, submission text, success message and brand color. For EU VAT collection, the VAT ID Check block has its own labels in the theme editor.

Open Invoice Setup for the reverse-charge line. Check the seller details, then follow the screen’s copy-and-paste instructions for the relevant order notification or invoice template.

  • Check the text and layout on desktop and mobile.
  • Place a qualifying test order and check that the expected VAT information and reverse-charge line appear in the selected template.
  • Check an ordinary order as well. Do not assume that adding the line creates a full PDF invoicing service.

Check before moving on

The customer-facing form and the selected notification or invoice template have been checked.

7. Configure US certificates if relevant

If the client sells to US resellers, add the exemption request form through the theme extension and use Form Builder to configure the required document fields. Open Certificates to review each uploaded document and the extracted information before approving or rejecting it.

  • Confirm the document’s scope, details and expiration date before approval; OCR extraction is not an approval decision.
  • In Settings, choose Send expiration reminders. Starter has the 7-day reminder; Pro B2B also offers the 30-day reminder.
  • Check the request status and the resulting customer tax settings after approval or rejection.

Check before moving on

The client knows how to review requests and follow documents over time.

A small test matrix for the agency

Use a suitable test environment and compare the app record with the final Shopify order. These are checks of Wezy’s intended workflow, not a substitute for the merchant’s tax settings.

CaseWhat to check
Valid VAT number, supported cross-border EU destinationThe validation is recorded and the final order receives the eligible exemption.
Domestic delivery or VAT country inconsistent with deliveryThe app does not apply its EU reverse-charge exemption.
Invalid number, missing address or failed VIES lookupNo exemption is granted from incomplete or invalid evidence.
HT/TTC display, shipping and an existing promotionThe toggle and the automatic discount behave separately; the final total matches the intended configuration.

What to leave with your client

  • The plan chosen and the features enabled.
  • The location of the VAT field and the theme blocks.
  • The VAT rate and any collection or shipping settings.
  • The test orders, validation records and expected outcomes.
  • The location of the invoice line, and who will review certificate requests.
  • This guide and support@wezy.app for future setup questions.

If something does not look right

The VAT check succeeds, but the order is still taxed

Check the shipping address, VAT country, seller settings and whether reverse charge is enabled. Check that the intended customer is authenticated in the theme path. A valid VAT number alone is not enough.

The HT/TTC switch is missing

Check Pro B2B access, the app block placement and Toggle visibility. With Tax-exempt customers only, test with the appropriate signed-in customer.

The price changes on the page, but not in checkout

The toggle is display-only. Check the separate automatic discount settings, permission and eligibility, then inspect the final Shopify total.

The invoice line is not visible

Open Invoice Setup and confirm that the line has been added to the template being used. Check a qualifying order rather than an ordinary taxed order.
